Begin paying closer attention to the many sounds you can hear in your everyday life. How might you begin recording these sounds and weaving them together in an audio editor?

For this assignment, choose a place you spend time in nearly every day and listen to the many sounds, soft and loud, fast and slow, that you may be able to hear. Move around if you need to, or try listening at different times of the day. List these sounds. Listen first, then make this list, before you show up with your recorder!

This could be your dorm room, your favorite part of a library building, a common area in the student center, the gym, etc. It should be either a public space or a place that you have permission to be moving around and recording sound with your phone (and nowhere that recording sound would raise privacy issues).

Return to that place with your microphone and try to make clear recordings of all of those different sounds. Capture at least ten minutes of sound total, so you have lots of material to work with. Don’t forget to capture a minutes of good “room sound”!

Put your recordings into an audio editor and turn these sounds into a piece of roughly one minute that gives us a sense of that everyday place where you recorded them. Email me the files at least half an hour before class starts; we will listen to them together in class and discuss.
